GALEON 2 Action Plan
as of December 2007
Action Plan Outline
- Agree on high-level dataset categories
- Establish extensions to CF conventions for each dataset category
- Determine relationships to:
- Unidata CDM Scientific Data Types
- CSML Scientific Feature Types
- Obs. & Meas. Sampling Features
- Map CF-netCDF categories to ISO 19123
- Establish metadata forms: CSML, ncML-G
- Experiment with CF-netCDF encoded coverages as payload for WCS, WFS, SOS
Divide (Labor) and Conquer
- •Coordinate individual efforts toward a whole greater than the sum of the parts
- Each group focuses on areas of expertise
- Work on tasks group has funding for
- Stay aware of other groups’ efforts
- Coordinate efforts wherever possible
- Results of lessons learned from implementation and experimentation feeds into standard definition process
British Atmospheric Data Center: Scientific Feature Types / CSML
-
conceptual level mapping of CSML Scientific Feature Types to O&M and ISO 19123 coverages
- broadening community engagement with CSML
- CSML (GML) representation of metadata (and data in some cases) for CS community datasets
- implementation (python) of and experimentation with minimal WCS needed to serve CS community datasets
- [Note:] Python client (to both WCS 1.0 and 1.1) has been agreed to be adopted into OWSLib]
- examination of alternative protocols (e.g., WFS) for serving CSML datasets
- liaison with GML, WFS, and CS communities
U of Florence CNR/IMAA: Common Data Model, ncML-G, CS-W
- Conceptual level mapping of CDM Scientific Data Types to ISO 19123 coverages
- CF-netCDF conceptual and encoding level mapping of CDM Scientific Data Types
- ncML-G (GML) representation of metadata (and data in some cases) for CDM/CF-netCDF community datasets
- implementation (Java) of minimal WCS server and client needed for CDM data types
- implementation (Java) of CS-W client and server that includes THREDDS catalog access
- liaison to catalog standards and European data systems communities
George Mason University: NASA data / HDF-EOS / CS-W
- serving NASA satellite data (swath data type)
- implementation of WCS clients and servers for those datasets
- liaison to HDF-EOS community
- implementation of CS-W services for THREDDS catalogs
- liaison to catalog standards development and implementation communities
Unidata: CDM Scientific Data Types / CF-netCDF
- conceptual level mapping of CDM Scientific Data Types to ISO 19123 coverages
- work to extend CF conventions to include CDM CDM Scientific Data Types
- CF-netCDF encoding level mapping of CDM Scientific Data Types
- implementation (Java) of minimal WCS server as part of TDS (THREDDS Data Server) to serve CF-netCDF community datasets
- harmonize TDS metadata with standards: CSML, ncML, CS-W
- liaison to CF, Oceans (irregular grids, SWE), Hydrology (Observation Data Model), CS-W
SURA/DataFed: SWE / station obs / irregular grids
- joining efforts to extend CF for station obs and irregular grids
- mapping station obs and irregular grids to ISO 19123 standard coverages
- mapping those ISO coverages to SWE O&M sampling feature types
- liaison with air quality and coastal oceans communities
- experimenting with connections among WCS, WFS, SOS data access
- liaison with SWE efforts and Oceans IE
Additional Activities
These are GALEON-related activities that are more indirectly related to the revised goals of GALEON 2.
British Met Office
- Provision of a proprietary WCS to test client interoperability (initially WCS 1.0, later WCS 1.0+)
- Evaluation of THREDDS Data Server (TDS) to provide access to Met Office data (internally), including the WCS interface
- Development of TDS IO Service Providers for two Met Office bespoke formats (PP format and Nimrod format) which would make those datasets available via WCS
- Proposal to extend (and revise) CF metadata convention to enhance the grid mapping attributes (Phil Bentley - see: http://cf-pcmdi.llnl.gov/trac/ticket/18)
- Provide useful review input for GALEON activities.
